Student's exhibition

Last term I taught the course AE 310, Intro to Applied Design at the University of Victoria. The final project for this course was to design a social poster. The work produced by the students was excellent and it's rewarding to see not only how their design skills have improved over the term, but to get to know the different issues they care about and the creative visual solutions for addressing these important topics. This Wednesday, the exhibition Posters for Change, displaying their work opens at Uvic along with two other Art Ed exhibits: The Faculty exhibition and Familia, a showcase of the work of Art Educators and their families.

My Poster was selected for the international contest & exhibition The Sprit of FIFA Poster Design Competition & Exhibition at TEDx International Conference, hosted by Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. I am very excited that my poster design was selected to be in the top 100 for the international contest Poster4Tomorrow. This year the theme for the competition was against the death penalty. Exhibitions opened on 10/10/10 all over the world. Here are some pictures of some of the places where the posters are being displayed.

After JetBlue became the first company authorized to incorporate the Milton Glaser's I Love New York logo into its own, the New York times invited readers to contribute with their own interpretations of the iconic symbol. My design "censored love" was chosen by the editors and was published in the print edition on Sept 26, 2010.

I am very happy to have my first book chapter ever published, specially in a book by such a prolific writer as Michael Wolff. The book is titled "Talk about Careers in Science" and even thought the theme is somewhat different to my usual work I really enjoyed working with Michael and was very pleased with the way my chapter turned out. My contribution to the discussion about how students talk about their career choices is focused on chance and probability and the ways in which human beings attempt to calculate their odds as a way to control the impossible: what will happen in the future. I am grateful for this opportunity and hope to work with Michael again in the future.

Uvic Lipdub

This year I'm participating as the vicenpresident of the Cuban Salsa Club at Uvic. As I've said before, salsa has become a real passion, and Rueda was were it all began. Going to the club is like a family tradition and wednesday has become my favorite day of the week.
A couple of weeks ago the club had the opportunity to be part of the Uvic Lipdub, a project organized by Shawn Slavin that consisted in a massive lipdub of the Song "Haven't Met you Yet" by Michael Buble. It was a great experience and I loved watching the students come together to have some fun while representing their University. The video will be officially released October 22nd.

I've neglected the blog for a while, so here's a brief update of what I've been up to in the summer/fall of this year.

In June I travelled to Europe to present at the The InSEA (International Society of Education through Art) European congress 2010 in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. My conference was about social communication and using posters in the classroom as a way to enagage students with positive change.

I visited Paris for the first time in my life and found it not to be over rated at all. I met amazing people and just fell in love with the city. I can't wait to go back.

I also visited Ireland where I got to finally meet my long time facebook friend Christopher Scott. Creator of FAKE Magazine Chris is inmensely talented and hanging out with him filled me with passion and creativity. We designed a poster together and I enjoyed working with him very much. I hope we can colaborate more in the future.

In the UK I went to Bristol to visit my long time friend Karen (who knew me before I was even born) and then spent my last days in London, another wonderful city, with great energy.

While in Europe I also had the opportunity to practice what has become my latest obsession: Salsa Dancing. What used to be a one-hour per week class has now turned into the element that rules my life. I'm in love with the music, the steps and the people. It is like an international language that you can use wherever you go and it has allowed me to get to know more about the local subcultures of such turistic cities.

After returning to Victoria I taught two undergraduate summer courses at Uvic: Design and Photography. It was hard work for me and the students but the results were great and I was very proud of them.

In Septemeber I began my fourth term in my PhD program and I have a pretty heavy course load. I am also teaching the Intro to Applied Design course again so my schedule is quite busy.
After this term I'll be presenting my Candidacy exams and so far my thesis is getting shaped around the issue of social communication and posters. I will post more about this as the ideas become more structured and defined.

Haiti Poster Project

My two posters for the Haiti Poster Project have been selected by the World Bank for their "Helping Haiti" conference this year. the event is attended by more than 4000 people from all over the world.

The Haiti Poster Project is a collaborative effort by the design community to help effect change through our work. Signed and numbered, limited edition posters have been donated by designers and artists from around the world. All money raised will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

ASEJ

This weekend I had the opportunity to visit Toronto for the first time to present in the Arts for Environmental and Social Justice (ASEJ) Symposium, at the Royal Conservatory.

Researchers, academics, educators, artists, social activists and many other professionals addressed the issue of the arts as a vehicle to advance social and environmental change.

My conference Images of Dissent, designing social posters focused on the role of social communication in the classroom and the use of design as a tool for social change.

FAKE Plastic

I'm so happy to be able to contribute with the wonderful project of Christopher Scott, FAKE Magazine. For Issue 3 I created an illustration based on my thoughts about social communication. My piece was inspired by a phrase from Focault: "As soon as one can no longer think things as one formerly thought them, transformation becomes both very urgent, very difficult and quite possible".

Teachers of Teachers

McPherson Library Gallery, Victoria BC

For the 30th consecutive year, the Art Education Faculty will display a rich and diverse collection of images at the McPherson Library Gallery at the University of Victoria. I'm participating with 3 posters that showcase my interest in social design.

The exhibit, with the largest group of contributors on record, will show the work from 22 studios of art educators who practice what they teach. The work comes from a range of backgrounds, from retired professors to masters students working as teaching assistants. On view will be themes capturing traditional and realistic perspectives to newer media explorations that are ephemeral and mystical.

From the 21 to the 26 of September I had the opportunity to attend the Third International Seminar about Design and Sustainability in Tampico, Mexico organized by the Universidad Autónoma de Tampico. I participated with the conference "Sustainability and Equality, the role of the Social Poster" and the Poster design workshop. It was an amazing week and I'm very happy I had the opportunity to meet amazing professional from the fields of graphic design, industrial design and architecture from all over the world. Good 50x70 2009

This year two of my entries were selected as winners in the Good 50x70 International Poster Contest. The chosen posters were animal extinction for the WWF and The medical industry for Emergency. The posters will be exhibited at La Triennale gallery in Milan from June the 19th to July the 22nd and included in the catalogue. Along with the Exhibition Good 50x70 will host workshops led by three of jury members: Alain Le Quernec, Woody Pirtle and Yossi Lemel. You can see all the fantastic winning entries in the contest Gallery.

Hong Kong Exhibition

The Good 50x70 project is having its first exhibition in the Far East. The posters will be showcased at the OC Gallery until the 5th of May. The exhibition will also be displayed from the 27th to the 30th of April and from the 18th to the 21st of May in the covered terrace of the City University in Kowloon Tong. Two of my posters will be on display so if you leave nearby you can check them out or you can see the flickr slideshow here.

Bienal Fotográfica de Baja California

One of my photos, entitled Elsewhere was selected for the Sixth Photography Biennale of Baja California organized by the Instituto de Cultura de Baja California (ICBC) and the National Council for Culture and the Arts. The exhibition was held in Mexicali and just came to Tijuana last week. Aftwerwards it will be exhibited in Ensenada.

Languages Matter!

I received an honorable mention in the "Languages Matter" poster contest organized by Unesco and Design 21. The objective of the contest was to create awareness about the importance preserving the mother languages and cultural diversity. My proposal "Alphabet Soup" uses a common element in a playful way using the soup to represent the diversity of languages in the world. The judges said: "This pleasure is enhanced by the beauty of the image. The pleasure of the mouth (food) where our tongue tastes the alphabet’s letters - or ideograms - makes us like the language we learned at the age where we were eating the alphabet soup..."

Good Exhibitions

The Good 50x70 exhibition continues this year at the Istanbul Design Week on June. Last year the exhibition toured all over Europe and was showcased at the famous m.a.x. museum.
My posters were winners in the Human Rights and Hunting categories. I wish I could have seen the exhibition when it came to Mexico but unfortunately I wasn't able to travel to monterrey at that time. Anyways, I'm so glad to have been a part of such an amazing project.

The main speaker was Bennet Peji, who talked about his city branding work.
